A HORSFORTH-based speciality chemicals company is stepping up its support for a scheme which encourages children into science and technology.

The Stephenson Group which specialises in soap production for clients such as The Body Shop and employs 100 people, joined the STEM ( science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programme in May. The company has committed six volunteers including CEO Jamie Bentley and is planning to double that number over the next 12 months.

The announcement came after this year's A level results which saw chemistry retain its position as the sixth most popular A level, behind maths, English, biology, psychology and history.

With more than 33,000 volunteers UK-wide, the STEM Ambassador Programme is a government-led initiative that encourages young people to think more positively about science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Jamie said: "It’s great to see chemistry retaining its popularity with A level students and the science subjects proving a popular choice for university education and as a potential career path.

“As proactive volunteers we have been supporting schools in our local area through interactive talks, workshops and site visits to engage students about STEM. If we can inspire young people to consider taking a STEM subject, and demonstrate all of the exciting possibilities and opportunities that it can present for them, then our roles as volunteers will be a fulfilling and successful experience. I wholeheartedly encourage other businesses in this sector to get involved with STEM and help inspire the next generation.”
