GREAT British Bake Off star Sandy Docherty is busy creating the cakes for an event which will raise money for a cancer charity.

Sandy will also attend the coffee and cake fundraiser in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The event will take place at The White Swan Hotel, Yeadon, from 11am to 1pm on Tuesday, August 23.

Manager of the White Swan Beth O'Connor said: "We are grateful to Sandy for supporting the latest of our charity events in this way. In the past few months we have raised hundreds of pounds for The Yorkshire Cancer Centre with a burlesque night and for St Gemma's Hospice with a quiz night.

"We are looking to raise a good amount for Macmillan and we will be assisting other charities in the coming months."

Beth, 27, took over as manager of The Swan at the end of March after working there for four years under the previous management. In that time the hotel has seen the five en suite rooms refurbished, the employment of a new chef with experience at some top hotels, and live music re-established.

The Monday evening Live Lounge is hosted by such talents as Marc Otway, Joe Dunwell and Ricky Fleming and is seen as a showcase for local musical talent. Bigger gigs have also been introduced with the latest by the Pretend Beatles playing to a packed house.

Beth said: "We are trying to do things for the whole community. We have bingo for our senior citizens on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon from 12.30pm and everyone is welcome.

"It is a great opportunity for some of our older folk to get out and socialise."
