AN MP has visited a homeless charity to learn about its vital work.

Pudsey, Horsforth and Aireborough MP Stuart Andrew went to Emmaus in Leeds to find out more about the charity and the problem of homelessness in the city.

Mr Andrew met with companions – people supported by the charity – as well as staff members and the chairman of trustees, Glenn Miller. Emmaus Leeds supports 26 formerly homeless people by offering a home, meaningful work in a social enterprise and an opportunity to get back on their feet again.

The MP said: "I was pleased to be able to join Emmaus to see the excellent work they are doing. No-one should be living on the street, so I am glad to see places like Emmaus working hard to offer a community that provides shelter and work opportunities. This is a charity that really inspires and everyone I met was so enthusiastic and committed. Leeds is very fortunate to have such a successful Emmaus project."

Mr Andrew enjoyed lunch in the charity's cafe with food prepared in the community kitchen, before touring the building.

Donald Forrester, Chief Executive at Emmaus Leeds, said: "We’re really grateful that Stuart took the time to visit and talk to members of our community. It was good to be able to demonstrate what we do and discuss some of the issues around homelessness in Leeds."

The charity has its main community building, social enterprise and cafe on St Mary’s Street, and runs two shops at Kirkgate Market, selling donated furniture, clothes, books, bikes, household goods and upcycled products.

Companions work in all areas of the Emmaus Leeds social enterprise and community, gaining valuable skills and experience while making a direct contribution to the sustainability and success of the charity.
