AN OTLEY church is bidding farewell to its pastor of more than 30 years.

Martin Woodier is leaving the role at Bethel Church Otley to help care for his wife, Kim, who has Multiple Sclerosis.

The 52-year-old's departure after more than three decades marks a major change for the church, which is currently celebrating its 100th anniversary.

A church spokesman said: "In the year that marks the 100th anniversary of its founding, Bethel Church Otley will be giving thanks to God for its long-standing presence in the town and the unchanging nature of its message of hope.

"It will also be experiencing significant change when Martin Woodier, its pastor for 30 years, hands on the baton to new pastor, Chris Haley.

"Many Otley residents will remember Martin from their school days, as he has consistently taken assemblies in Otley primary schools and presented Bibles to those leaving for high school.

"Martin has served the church faithfully, at both local and national levels, through his contributions to the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC).

"He is leaving the pastorate in order to devote more time to the care of Kim, his wife, who has MS. They will remain in Otley, where they have enjoyed so many happy years and brought up their three children."

Mr Woodier's successor, Chris Haley, is 32 years old and has, with his wife Caroline, been a church member for three years, serving up until now as assistant pastor.

He was formerly involved with student ministry at Moorlands Church in Lancaster.

Mr Haley is due to officially become pastor at Bethel Church Otley, which meets at the Chevin Community Centre in Craven Street each Sunday morning, on September 1.

The church also hols Sunday evening services, and other weekday activities, at Bethel Church Hall in Myers Croft, off Station Road.
