ENTERPRISING teenager Ethan Wright invented a jigsaw challenge to help raise funds for a First World War battlefields trip.

Ethan, a Year 10 student at Horsforth School, devised the challenge for younger students based on the football Jigraphy game.

He presented the winner, Sam Senior, with a football.

"The idea was to complete as many pieces as possible in six minutes," Ethan said. "Sam came along several times and was determined to win. I was delighted to present him with the prize which is a Yorkshire Army regiment football as he managed to complete 75 pieces."

Teacher James Bovington who is organising the trip said: "Ethan devised this challenge himself and has also done other fund-raising initiatives. Along with another year ten student Tom he gave a presentation at Horsforth Town Council which resulted in a grant of £250 for the trip and also did several bag packing sessions. Ethan is a good role model for younger students and also took on running the younger boys’ school swim team, a sport in which he himself excels."

As well as the battlefields trip in July Ethan is looking forward to performing in Act Two of the Horsforth School production The Pals on July 13 and 14.

The play, written by Mr Bovington, tells the story of Horace Iles, a fourteen year old from Woodhouse who was underage when he joined the Leeds Pals Battalion in 1914 and who at sixteen was the youngest of the Leeds Pals to die a century ago.

Ethan said: "All this fundraising and profits from the play will help us donate to military charities so I really hope that lots of people will attend our play and see us portray the lives of young lads who were just like us really, but who suffered a terrible fate."

One who will definitely be attending is Sam, who said: "I’m grateful to Ethan for coming up with this competition and look forward to playing with the ball and seeing if I can do the football jigsaw even quicker."
