BUGLES will sound in Otley and Yeadon this week to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

A bugler will play at Otley's Memorial Garden at 11am on Friday, July 1 - the day the First World War battle, one of the bloodiest in history, began.

A bugle will also sound at a ceremony that will take place on the steps of Yeadon Town Hall at 1pm on the same day.

Councillor Sandy Lay (Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) said: "Everyone knows someone that was lost in the First World War, and the Battle of the Somme left many families missing their sons, husbands and fathers.

"Otley and Yeadon had many fine men join both the Leeds and Manchester Pals, and most did not return.

"This historic landmark for the Battle of the Somme provides an opportunity for us to take a moment to reflect on their past sacrifice, as well as pay our respects to all the men and women who have bravely served in our armed forces since.

"This is a chance for us all in the community to show our gratitude to the great work that our servicemen and women do for the country."
