MORE volunteers are being sought to help tend to the gardens around Ilkley's historic Manor House.

Although the Grade I listed former museum and art gallery was closed by Bradford Council last year, volunteers have continued to maintain the gardens.

The future of the Castle Yard building is still under debate, and a group of townspeople have submitted proposals to building owner Bradford Council suggesting a way forward for community management. The Council has been considering putting the building up for sale.

The Manor House stands on part of the site of Ilkley's Roman fort, and part of the building dates back to the late medieval period.

The small group of volunteers has continued to look after the gardens since the closure of the museum. Local resident Jan Stallworthy has developed a wildflower border and donated shrubs have been cultivated.

The group has the benefit of two volunteers for watering plants, which has been needed in a number of dry spells.

Members say they would welcome more help with weeding and occasional trips to transport the garden waste for re-cycling.
