WHEN young Phoebe Lavery's artwork was chosen to publicise a right royal summer festival the judges could hardly have made a better decision.

Not only did Phoebe design an impressive poster for Bramhope Summer Festival which is this year celebrating the Queen's birthday. But, unknown to organisers, the six-year-old also shares a birthday with the monarch.

Phoebe was the winner of a competition at Bramhope Primary School to design a logo for the festival and the Queen's 90th.

The entries were judged by one of the parish councillors and a school governor - and it was only after her work was picked that they found out her birthday was also on April 21.

Parish council vice-chair Hilary Harris, who is also festival chair, said: "We had no idea of this when she was selected as the winner so it is a remarkable coincidence."

All the entries are being exhibited in the village as part of the festival.

The festival took its lead this year from St Giles Church which will be hosting a Celebration Dinner on Saturday, June 11 followed on Sunday June 12 by church services and a Right Royal Do afternoon tea.

For the first time Adel Players will appear as part of the Festival and will be at the Robert Craven Hall on May 27 performing a murder mystery, The Raffles Affair.

The festival committee is also welcoming back guitarist Derrick Harris. This year he will be performing with a quartet at St Giles Church Hall on Saturday, June 18. Derrick will be joined by Nicki Allan, an accomplished and versatile singer and songwriter, who last performed in Bramhope as part of the Jubilee celebrations.

Bramhope Methodist Church Film Club will be showing Dad’s Army on Tuesday, June 21 in the Methodist Church Hall at 7pm.

Once again, Parish Councillor Diane Fox will be leading two History Walks, setting off from the Puritan Chapel, Bramhope. Diane will be covering different aspects of the history of Bramhope, with particular focus on Bramhope in the 1911 census and the World War One years. The walks, which are free, will be held on Tuesday, June 14 at 6.30 pm and Sunday, June 26 at 2pm.
