WHARFEDALE joined in with the World's Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday, with workplaces, community organisations and other venues serving up coffee and cake for charity.

Events were held along the valley to support the nationwide day of fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Supporters turned out in force to show their support in Otley. The town hosted a number of events with one of the largest at Otley Cricket Club, where Bramhope resident Sarah Smith had once again organised a feast of refreshments and cakes, along with a prize raffle, for the cause.

That raised a whopping £530 for Macmillan, and a table-top sale held by the charity's Otley and Wharfedale Fundraising Group at Otley Core a few days earlier did even better, bringing in £863.

The proceeds from several other World's Biggest Coffee Morning events in the town, including one at Otley Courthouse - which preceded an NHS consultation - are still being counted up.

The Ilkley fundraising committee were busy on Friday and throughout the weekend.

Teams of volunteers delivered coffee and biscuits to 120 people at work in businesses around the town on Friday and on Saturday morning coffee and cake were served outside Dale Eddison on The Grove to more supporters and collections were made at M&S. Approximately £500 has been raised so far and there is more to come in.

With so many coffee mornings taking place in the town and surrounding area, the committee says it is very grateful for the support given both by the public and also the Ilkley Co-operative store, The Loafer and other businesses who supplied coffee, tea, milk, scones and biscuits for the events.

The Priory Church, Bolton Abbey, held its coffee morning at Bolton Abbey Village Hall, raising £650 for Macmillan. Organisers want to thank everyone who contributed.

Schools also joined in the fundraising with the new foundation stage unit at Beamsley's Boyle and Petyt Primary School raising £150 at its Macmillan Coffee Morning on Friday.

Parents attended the event in the new unit and tucked into chocolate crispies, made by the class, and donated cakes.

The children also enjoyed making play dough buns and serving pretend coffee in their tea sets while their mums and dads had a chat.

The new unit offers full-day care places for children from the age three to reception.

Otley's Town Mayor dropped in to support a fundraising table top sale. Councillor Philip Bye (Lib Dem, Prince Henry's) joined members of Macmillan Cancer Support's Otley and Wharfedale Fundraising Group at the World's Biggest Coffee Morning event on September 21.

Held at the Old People's Welfare Centre on Crossgate, the sale proved popular despite the wet weather.
