PEOPLE in Yeadon are being urged to adopt a planter to help brighten up the High Street.

Aireborough Civic Society is hoping residents will come forward to look after the plants that have been put in place to brighten up the town centre.

The colourful flowers at the town hall, High Street and Harper Lane bus island were planted by ACS volunteers in June, with plants supplied by Leeds City Council’s Red Hall Nurseries.

Civic Society chairman, Clive Woods, said: "We are really pleased with this year’s results.

"It has been a very successful working partnership between the community and our council.

"Yeadon High Street is in a conservation area and the town hall is a listed building, so it is very important that we make them look special and at their best for residents and visitors alike."

Aireborough Civic Society members, along with volunteers and local councillors, spent an afternoon in June preparing and planting tubs and barrier baskets. Local businesses have been helping to look after the planters.

Leeds City Council supplied the hanging baskets and Yeadon councillors Colin Campbell, Sandy Lay and Ryk Downes gave financial support.

Mr Woods added: "It would be great if either individuals or businesses could adopt one planter or barrier basket for the rest of this summer and, hopefully, next year.

"We would like to involve more people from the community in improving the appearance of the High Street, and this would give our flower show a sporting chance. Adopting a 'planter' would normally involve watering weekly, if needed, and removing any weeds and dead flower heads."
