PLANS for the redevelopment of Bramhope sheltered flats are due to take a step forward with the completion of surveys in September.

Topographical and tree surveys are expected to be carried out at Rosemont towards the end of September. Once they are finished, architects West and Machel will be able to finalise their plans and costs for the redevelopment, and a meeting will be arranged with residents.

Elderly people living in Rosemont were left shocked and distressed last year when Leeds City Council sent them a letter saying their accommodation was to be shut down.

The council later issued an unreserved apology insisting the letter had been sent out in error and no decision had been made.

The local authority issued three options for the future of the flats in April this year after an architect’s independent report.

The news was celebrated by campaigners, who said they had forced the council to make a U-turn.

Options put forward include conversion of the entire building, conversion of part of the building with the remainder demolished to make way for new-build homes for sale or starting from scratch by demolishing the existing building and replacing it with purpose-built flats for older people. The council also guaranteed that residents would have a home available for them at Rosemont.

Adel and Wharfedale ward councillor, Barry Anderson, said: "I accept some people are saying the delays are not good, however I do feel that with the council taking its time, it is more likely to get a correct decision, both for residents in Rosemont and for the Bramhope area, as the information that will be obtained will enable an informed view to be taken by all concerned.

"That said, I would implore the council to deliver on its promise of keeping the residents aware at all times of what is happening."

After the announcement in April, Neil Evans, Leeds City Council’s director of environment and housing, said: "We’ve been clear we want Rosemont residents to have better, warmer and safer accommodation."
