OTLEY'S MP has called on Parliament to celebrate 'all things Yorkshire'.

This year's Yorkshire Day - the 40th - takes place on Saturday, August 1, and will be followed by a week-long celebration of the region's qualities.

Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Leeds North West) has tabled a Parliamentary motion asking the House of Commons to join in the promotion of "all that God's own county has to offer".

The Otley-based MP has also repeated his calls for the Government to create a Mayor of Yorkshire role to push forward the area's "huge economic potential for growth".

Mr Mulholland said: "Thousands of us take great pride in calling Yorkshire 'home', and it's not hard to see why!

"Yorkshire women and men are fantastically hospitable, we’ve also had so much success over the years in music, film, sports, and many other areas.

"I suspect Yorkshire's well-known refusal to take no for an answer also has something to do with it.

"On this Yorkshire Day and Week we are also reminded of our real identity as belonging to a much wider region, as opposed to the artificial ones created after we were split up into North, South and West.

"A region as rich as ours should be reunited and be given its own mayor- that would be a huge step forward in championing Yorkshire as a whole, and all it has to offer."

Northern Powerhouse Minister James Wharton MP has said he would be willing to discuss the idea further.
