THE 2015 Otley Carnival has been hailed a financial and popular success.

The Carnival Committee's AGM heard that enough money was generated this year to both cover costs and donate a share of £3,500 to the event's three beneficiaries.

Martin House Children's Hospice, Otley Courthouse's Singing for the Brain, and Pool-in-Wharfedale Youth Club will all benefit from the money.

Retiring committee Chairman Wendy Corden said: "The parade entries this year were of a very high standard, people were in such high spirits and many of the spectators followed the parade onto a busy carnival field.

"The size of the parade was as good as the previous year and just as enjoyable.

"I would like to congratulate everyone on their splendid efforts."

Mrs Corden also wished her successor, Samantha Roberts, good luck as she prepares to chair the carnival over the next two years, with the 2016 parade looking certain to be dominated by the Olympics.

Otley Town Mayor Councillor Philip Bye (Lib Dem, Prince Henry's), meanwhile, was assisted by the Carnival Queen, Olivia Driver, and her attendants when he presented prizes at the meeting.

The shield for the collector who gathered the most money in a bucket was presented to Irene Willis, while the trophy for the highest tin can collection was awarded to Marcella Dickason. [CRRCT]

And pupil Livia Mirfield, who suggested the 101 Dalmatians parade theme, received the Keith Wilkinson Memorial Shield on behalf of Westgate Primary School, whose float won the People’s Choice Best in Parade category.
