A TEAM of highway engineers who help keep Leeds moving have won a national award.

Leeds City Council’s highways asset management team scooped the award for 'creating value for the community' at the recent Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation awards 2015.

The team were honoured for developing a maintenance model which is used to help keep the city’s 3000km road network in good working order.

The model, which employs more than 10 years of data, is used to forecast trends in the condition of the highway, helping to plan better ways to spend the council’s money.

Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council’s executive member for regeneration, transport and planning, said:

"Maintaining Leeds’s highways network is a massive task, with those who work behind the scenes not often getting the credit they deserve for their continuing efforts.

"This national recognition this award represents goes some way to acknowledging the unsung heroes whose meticulous planning and attention to detail helps keep the city moving."

This year’s awards had a record number of entries, with more than 180 submissions for its 10 awards.
