A FILM about the Manakamana Temple in Nepal will be shown in Otley next month.

Otley Film Society and Otley Courthouse are teaming up to screen Manakamana, on Thursday, July 2, as a benefit event for the Nepal Earthquake Appeal.

The documentary, which will be shown at 7.30pm, follows the journeys of a cable car taking pilgrims up to the the Hindu site.

Most of the people featured in the film are from two villages based only a few miles from the epicentre of the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal in April.

The Manakamana Emergency Housing Charity has been set up by the film's directors, Stephanie Spray and Pacho Velez, to raise enough money to build 30 homes for the surviving villagers.

The film's distributors, Dogwoof, have also forgone their usual licence fee and the Film Society is paying for the venue, so all ticket sale proceeds from the Otley screening will go directly to the charity.

Manakamana will be introduced by Andy Moore, who spent time with the film's producers, the Sensory Ethnography Lab.

A brief discussion about the latest news from Nepal will also be held afterwards.

Tickets cost £5 and are available from the Courthouse on (01943) 467466, or via otleycourthouse.org.uk .
