A CLIMBER suffered serious injuries in a fall at popular Ilkley Moor climbing spot the Cow and Calf Quarry on April 16.

Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association (UWFRA) and specialist Yorkshire Ambulance Service teams, including rapid response staff and a hazardous areas response team, were called to the scene, near Hangingstone Road, shortly before 8pm.

They were alerted that a man in his 20s had fallen in the quarry, close to the Cow and Calf Rocks landmark.

The fell rescue team said the 23-year-old man had fallen 30 feet and sustained ‘very serious’ head and chest injuries.

Team members assisted an ambulance paramedic to stabilise the casualty before he was stretchered to a waiting road ambulance.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service, who said the man suffered shoulder and head injuries, was taken to Leeds General Infirmary. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

UWFRA receives no Government funding and services remain free to those who need it.

Annual running costs are more than £40,000 and the rescue team relies on donations and fundraising events to continue to save lives.
