IRRESPONSIBLE dog owners in Otley are being warned to clean up after their animals – or face the consequences.

Councillor Sandy Lay (Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) says a range of measures will be used to stop dog fouling at Cross Green Community Centre. The problem was flagged up by Jodie Collins, an employee at Bright Ideas Pre-School which is based in the building – as is Otley Children’s Centre.

Posting on the Otley: The Community We Live In Facebook page, she said: “Over the past few weeks we have had a problem with dogs fouling in the car park and gateways. This is also the children’s centre, so I find it disturbing that any dog owner would allow this to happen.”

Coun Lay has taken up the issue. He said: “Irresponsible dog owners continue to give all dog owners a bad name.

“I’m working with residents to help them report dog fouling in a timely manner and will continue to work with the council, the community and my colleagues to find solutions.

“New signs, increased dog warden patrols and a more proactive approach from those affected should mean that these owners will eventually be caught.

“As always, I’d urged anyone with evidence or information to contact Leeds City Council on (0113) 222 4406.”

Dog owners caught allowing their animals to foul face being fined up to £1,000 if they are prosecuted, or being hit with a £75 spot fine.
