A LANDSCAPE gardener will be running the 2015 Virgin Money London Marathon to support the life saving work of St John Ambulance after its volunteers gave him vital help when he got into difficulties during a race.

William Woodhead, 26, of Burley-in-Wharfedale is joined by Toby Mountain, 20, of Guiseley, in in taking on the challenge in support of the charity.

William wanted to give something back to St John Ambulance after its volunteers came to his aid at the Bramham Park Total Warrior race last year. “During the race I felt dizzy, faint and had no energy, so I stopped in the middle,” he said. “I knew I either wouldn’t make it or would do more damage, so I went straight to the first aiders.

“They were really helpful. They tested my blood pressure, gave me dry clothes, wrapped foil around me and monitored me continuously for about an hour and a half.

“If no-one raised money to train and equip them, these volunteers wouldn’t be there. I wouldn’t fancy passing out in the middle of the road with no-one there who knew first aid.”

Toby learned first aid as part of his scuba diving training and wanted to promote it. He said: “The work of St John Ambulance is of extreme importance. Although I’ve not had to use it yet, I know from my training just how much of a life saver first aid can be.”

The pair are among nearly 200 runners fundraising for SJA in the Virgin Money London Marathon on April 26. The race route will be lined with SJA first aiders, ready to treat runners and spectators for a wide range of injuries and medical conditions.

Fundraising Events Manager for St John Ambulance, Sabina Pasokhy, said: “Our first aiders help thousands of runners cross the finish line each year.

“Fundraising for us is a great way for runners to take part in one of the world’s greatest public sporting events while supporting the work of volunteers who help to keep everyone safe on the day.”

All runners fundraising for St Johns Ambulance are supported by a marathon co-ordinator in the months leading up to the event.
