AN UNDER-THREAT youth and community centre in Otley serves a “recognised deprivation area” and should be supported, not axed.

That was one of the conclusions when town councillors debated the future of Weston Lane Youth Centre this week.

Leeds City Council, in a bid to save £250,000, is carrying out a three-month consultation about ten of its under-used or struggling community centres.

The results will determine the fate of places like Weston Lane, which could be closed, transferred over to the community or changed so they can host more activities.

Councillor Colin Campbell (Lib Dem, Prince Henry) told Monday’s policy and resources committee : “I think the relevant department has let this building run down deliberately.

“But Weston estate is the area of Otley where there are considerable issues.

“We should put on record our strong opposition to the loss of this community facility in that part of town.”
