ONE of Otley’s few remaining major employers is set to close next year - with the loss of 74 jobs.

Ideal Standard has announced plans to shut its Ilkley Road base in the town, which makes plastic mouldings for bathrooms, within the next 12 months.

The firm, which has factories across Europe, says the move is part of a decision to “restructure its production base” and is entering a formal, 30-day consultation with staff and trade unions.

Local politicians are warning that the closure would deal a “devastating blow” to Otley’s manufacturing sector, while MP Greg Mulholland has held urgent talks with the company.

He said: “I was very disappointed to hear about this and immediately requested a meeting.

“I have also written to the managing director to get assurance that all employees will be looked after in the event of the factory closing - and have been given those assurances.

“I am aware that the company is already seeking views of its staff as to ways they might be able to adapt what they do.

“Ideal Standard have made clear the Otley site doesn’t produce their core bathroom products and are seeking to have the mouldings made elsewhere, especially with the factory in serious need of repair.

“They have now started a six to 12-month consultation - over switching to another factory - and I have asked them to consider any way they could keep manufacturing in Otley, including the possibility of selling off some of the land and downsizing.”

Making the announcement last Thursday, Ideal Standard’s managing director Keith Broad said: “We do not make these kinds of proposals lightly, especially when they affect the livelihood of our employees.

“However, we believe that this is a necessary step to gain further efficiencies and safeguard our future competitiveness.

“We understand this is extremely difficult news for everyone, employees and the local community alike.

“We will do all we can to ease the transition for everyone involved and will, with immediate effect, initiate and comply with the legal consultation process with trade unions and employees.”

Otley Town Council leader Councillor John Eveleigh (Lab, Ashfield) said: “This is devastating news for the staff and their families.

“I visited Ideal Standard on a number of occasions and am well aware of their highly-skilled workforce.

“There is never a good time for this type of news, but just before Christmas is especially hard. Ideal Standard and Armitage Monobond have had a long and distinguished history in the town, so it is especially sad.

“A closure of this magnitude is bound to have far-reaching effects across the town and will leave a big hole in Otley’s manufacturing base. I hope it can be reconsidered.”

Cllr Colin Campbell (Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) echoed those sentiments: “Otley has a lot going for it with a skilled workforce and good regional links, so I would ask them to think again.”
