A LANDMARK replica Eiffel Tower went up in flames on Saturday in an unusual additional spectacle at the annual Burley Scouts and Guide Group bonfire.
The group reported a fantastic turnout of Burley-in-Wharfedale villagers, plus many visitors from further afield, and most of the stalls selling bonfire treats sold out.
Burley Scouts and Guides built the seven-metre-high wooden tower earlier this year, and it was put up in a garden on Main Street as part of the local welcome for the Grand Depart of the Tour de France.
It was later put up for sale on eBay to raise money towards a new headquarters for the village’s scouts and guides.
Sadly, the winning bidder never showed up, and organisers eventually decided to burn the tower at the annual bonfire and fireworks display – although fundraising for the new scout and guide hut goes on.
Organisers thanked all those who came to support the event, as well as villager, Tom Sumner, who organised the fireworks.
