A ten-year-old boy was chosen from hundreds of others to win the accolade of 'most promising dancer' in a Leeds competition.

Matthew Lyons, who lives in Guiseley, impressed the judges at the Can You Dance? competition, which featured top choreographers Mat Flint, Lucas

Macfarlane, Tom Shilcock, Gareth Walker and Mandy Montanez.

The youngster was taking part in the competition with West Yorkshire School of Performing Arts - the Guiseley-based dance school he attends.

Principal Karen Fawcett said: "Last year WYSPA won first prize of a workshop with Matt Flint so we didn’t expect to win again. We were shocked when we heard our name read out as runner ups.

"We had no sooner stopped cheering when Matthew Lyons was read out as the winner of ‘most promising dancer’ award. This is a spectacular achievement to win from the 100s of pupils at the event aged 8-28. Matthew was lifted in the air by all the judges with a massive smile on his face."

She said Matthew, who wants to dance in the West End, was chosen as the most promising dancer from around 400 children.

The youngster, who joined WYSPA when he was six, now takes classes in ballet, tap, modern, jazz, showkids, contemporary and competition.

"He practically lives here," Karen said. "He lives and breathes dance - that's all he wants to do."

The dances entered were choreographed by Esther Johnston who was a pupil at WYSPA before going to the London Theatre School where she gained her qualifications, returning to the Guiseley dance school to teach.
