Otley's MP has represented Great Britain in an international Rugby League game.

Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Leeds North West), helped his team record a one try to nil victory over Australia in the Masters - for over 35s - match at Warrington last weekend.

The MP was part of a 20 man Great Britain squad and played much of the game at second row and centre.

He said: "It was a huge honour for me to represent my country and to wear the famous Great Britain shirt was something I will never forget.

"To play against Australia in their iconic green and gold shirts is the ultimate challenge in rugby league and to beat them, and indeed stop them scoring, was a great result.

"The determination of the Great Britain team was etched on all our faces and we pushed our bodies as hard as we could and together did our country proud.

"After the game I felt every one of my 43 years but every bruise and ache was worth it!"

Players in Masters rugby wear different coloured shorts depending on their age, which dictates the amount of contact they are allowed to both receive and dish out.

Being under 45 meant Mr Mulholland played full contact. The MP is club captain of the Political Animals, a rugby league team comprising Lords, current and former MPs, and councillors, and also plays for Leeds Akkies, at Cookridge.
