An MP is joining a fundraising expedition to climb one of the world’s highest volcanoes.

Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Leeds North West) will team up with serving and former soldiers and two other MPs for the Battle Back and Mountaineering APPG Cotopaxi Expedition 2014.

Running from May 26 to June 10, the challenge will see the team members contending with temperatures of minus 10 Celsius as they attempt to reach the 5,897 metre summit of Cotopaxi in Ecuador.

The expedition aims to raise £10,000 for The Royal British Legion’s Battle Back Centre in Lilleshall, Shropshire, which helps wounded and injured armed services personnel.

Mr Mulholland will accompany two other members of the UK Parliamentary Mountaineering Group – John Mann and Tracey Couch – plus soldiers who have attended the Battle Back base.

He said: “It is a huge privilege to be part of the Battle Back team taking on this expedition to climb Cotopaxi, one of the highest volcanoes in the world.

“The Battle Back Centre does amazing work using adaptive sport and adventurous training to rehabilitate our brave servicemen and women who have been injured.

“This historic expedition, the first with a team from the Battle Back Centre, will be a big challenge physically and mentally.

“It will allow us to highlight the work of the centre and raise greater awareness of the challenges brave servicemen and women face dealing with the physical and mental scars of conflict.

“We also hope to raise money for the Royal British Legion to help them fund the centre, so I hope people will donate to help us do this and encourage us to reach the summit of Cotopaxi together as a team.”

The 12-strong team will be led by outdoor pursuits provider Carnegie Great Outdoors, with Dave Bunting, a former serviceman who led the British Army Everest West Ridge Expedition in 2006, acting as expedition leader.

Donations in support of the expedition, which is sponsored by Coventry Building Society, can be made at justgiving.com/teams/TRBLEcuador2014.
