Historic and classic vehicles were out in the Yorkshire Dales as Ilkley and District Motor Club held its annual Jubilee Historic Rally and Run.

The run, organised by Henry Carr, started and finished at the Millstones on the A59 near Blubberhouses and took competitors 150 miles into the Yorkshire Dales.

There were 10 special tests on private land and the event was won by Otley student Andrew Pullan, who navigated John Ruddock, of York, in a 1972 Ford Escort Mexico.

Press secretary of Ilkley and District Motor Club Henry Kitching said: “John and Andrew comfortably won the event by over half a minute, when on this type of competition seconds usually decide the results.

“This is a huge achievement by local lad Andy Pullan. For him to win first time in a national event of this size is fantastic – and he’s still only a teenager!”

Competitors came from as far afield as the Isle of Man, Wales and Cornwall, with vehicles ranging from Porsche 911s and MGBs to the oldest vehicle, a 1956 Austin A35.

Andrew’s father Nick, with navigator Ian Canavan, from Bainbridge, in the lowest-powered car – an 875cc Hillman Imp – finished an excellent 10th overall and second on regularities.

Darell Staniforth (Harrogate) and Les Mcguffog (Bradford) finished 13th overall and second in class and Ron Kendall (Bradford) and Nick Cooper (Otley) finished 15th overall. Pete Birtles from Leeds and Pete Johnson from Bradford won the Run section in a Volvo Amazon with event sponsor Simon Green from KT Green’s Bramhope fourth overall with Andrew Thorpe in an MGA.
