A young mother from Otley who is scared of heights is preparing to jump out of an aeroplane for a cause close to her heart.

Hayley Harder will face her fears when she attempts a tandem skydive from 14,000 feet at Lancaster on Saturday, May 10.

The 25-year-old is also hoping to raise a significant amount of money for Brain Tumour Research and Support across Yorkshire – a cause she chose after a close family member was diagnosed with brain cancer.

She said: “After the initial shock of finding out I thought ‘What can I do to help and to make a difference for those who are affected by brain tumours?’ “I chose a skydive to raise money towards the charity.

“Brain tumour research is under-funded and the public is unaware of the magnitude of the problem. And lack of funding and research into the treatment of aggressive, malignant brain tumours means survival rates are no better than they were 40 years ago.

“Previously, I have completed the Race For Life to raise money for cancer charities and I have run the Sport Relief Mile.

“I wanted to do something different that will take me out of my comfort zone as I have a fear of heights.

“Therefore I will be achieving a personal goal – I have always wanted to do a skydive – while raising money for charity.

“I am very nervous about jumping out of a plane because of my fear and in case something goes wrong. However, I am also very excited and intrigued as to how it will feel jumping at 14,000 feet and to experience a different view of the world and the adrenaline rush.

“Many who have done a skydive have said it is an amazing experience and they would love to do it all over again.”

Hayley’s jump is already being supported to the tune of £850.
