A favourite family recipe that holds poignant memories has won first place in a national competition for a Bramhope nurse.

Anne Aitken has perfected her ginger and orange cherubs over decades of baking with her grandma, mum and her two sons, one of whom died at the age of 18.

Now her recipe will take pride of place on Waitrose shelves across Britain after it came top in Lorraine’s Taste Off competition on national TV.

Anne, 51, was picked as one of the three finalists from a huge entry list. She won the competition this week after voting by viewers.

A keen baker since the age of three, she knew exactly which recipe to use when she decided to enter the competition.

“I had just made some Rascals a few days before and thought they would be a great choice as they are a good old-fashioned Yorkshire recipe,” she said.

“I have spent the last year looking after my husband Dave who has been very ill and thought it would be good to do something for me and challenge myself.”

Anne’s recipe was shortlisted, impressing the judges, including actress Debbie Rush, who plays cafe assistant Anna Windass in Coronation Street, and family cook Alex Hollywood, wife of master baker Paul Hollywood. Rascals – also known as turf cakes – are a cross between a rock cake, scone and biscuit. Anne’s recipe was passed down from her grandma and is written in her mother’s recipe collection, which she started in 1947.

“I have adapted the recipe over the years, depending on what ingredients I have in the cupboard,” she said.

“We are a family of gingerholics and I have added ingredients to satisfy our tastebuds.

“I named them ginger and orange cherubs because as a child my mum called me her little ginger cherub– we are all redheads – and over the years I have made them with my own little cherubs: my two sons, Scott, who died at 18, and Will, and they have loved making them and decorating them.

“I create a face using a cherry nose and current eyes and mouth. They all look the same when they go in the oven yet come out all looking different.”

The competition has seen Anne appear on the Lorraine show with Made in Chelsea star Jamie Laing.
