The owners of an Otley cafe have held another fundraiser for a hospital unit that saved their son’s life.

Erkan and Lisa Can’s now five- year-old son, Emre, was born with a heart condition that required urgent surgery when he was just two weeks old.

The couple were so grateful to the Children’s Heart Surgery unit at Leeds General Infirmary that in 2012, with the help of some cycling friends, customers and family, they raised £2,700 for the fund that supports it.

Last Friday, February 7, they held another fundraiser at the Otley cafe they run, The Rumblin’ Tum, in support of the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund’s Wear Red Day.

Erkan said: “We had a good day in the cafe with lots of customers in, it being a market day, and the support was fantastic. We were wearing our custom-made heart surgery fund T-shirts, provided by Wharfdale Embroidery, in the cafe and asking our customers for donations.

“We also have been supported by Emre’s school in Cookridge, Holy Trinity Primary, who asked all parents to send their kids to school wearing an item of clothing or an accessory in red, and to bring £1.”

The cafe is keeping its collection boxes out for a few more days to boost its fundraising total The Cans, meanwhile, are hoping the Leeds unit – whose future is still in the balance – will remain open to help other local families. Erkan said: “We need this unit and we admire the people who work there from top to bottom.”
