Young Wharfedale inventors are celebrating winning a national contest to design a robot.
Prince Henry’s Grammar School’s Robotics Club fought off tough competition to claim the prestigious Best Robot Design award at the National Lego Tournament in Manchester earlier this month.
The students, aged between 11 and 14, attend the extra-curricular club run by Elizabeth Allgar every Thursday, and worked on the project over the previous term.
Miss Algar said: “While the Robotics Club and Lego Championship are great fun for the students, we really value the opportunities it gives them to work on real-life solutions.
“Science, engineering, technology and mathematics really come to the fore – as well as their language and communication skills. In addition, they learn about co-operation and problem-solving and use their creative skills.”
The other team members were Andrew Tillotson, Jack Auchterlounie, Jack Cameron-Dolan, Morgan Crossley, George Garforth, Martin McBrinn, Euan Procter, Dean Scott, Adam Turner and Ciara Turner.
For the tournament – part of the global First® Lego® League – they, and the other competing teams, had to build, test and programme a robot so that it could solve a set of missions.
