An action group fighting large-scale housing developments in Menston has begun a fresh battle against plans for more than 140 new homes.

Menston Action Group (MAG) is calling on its supporters to “act now” against two planning applications to build a total of 146 houses on land off Bingley Road.

Developer Taylor Wimpey already has outline planning permission to build up to 135 new houses on Bingley Road, but has now submitted a detailed planning application for 134 homes.

And another developer, Chartford Homes, has submitted a planning application to Bradford Council for 12 houses on a field to the north east of the Bingley Road site.

MAG, which also opposed now-approved plans for 173 houses on Derry Hill, is contesting assessments of flooding risk and drainage in the two planning applications.

The group said: “Two new planning applications have recently been made for the Bingley Road fields, which we must act on now to protect our village roads from further congestion, our local secondary schools from overcrowding, and our sewers from overflowing and flooding.”

MAG claims the developments on Bingley Road and Derry Hill would destroy the character of the village, lead to more flooding and increased sewerage flowing down the street, according to expert evidence it has sought. It is urging residents to visit Bradford Council’s planning website and make their comments, or write to the council’s planning department.

In its latest newsletter, MAG says MP Philip Davies has asked for an adjournment debate in the House of Commons over Bradford Council’s handling of the planning process with the previous applications.

The group is continuing to keep an eye on the development of the Bradford Districts Local Plan. The most recent housing target for the village has dropped from 900 to 400 homes.

This was set out in the draft Core Strategy, the central part of the proposed Local Plan, which is due to go out to public consultation in the coming weeks.
