More news about Otley’s bid to create an Olympic legacy centre of sporting excellence is expected next week.
Organisers have been busy putting together a business plan for the Chevin Olympic Park after Leeds City Council gave the preferred – as yet unannounced – site a successful preliminary examination.
The project’s committee, comprised of members of many local sports clubs, will meet again tonight to discuss what further progress has been made.
The outline plan for the park envisages it as a centre that would put Otley on the map as a regional sporting hub, featuring:
- a sports hall and centrepiece athletics track, with synthetic football/rugby pitch in the middle
- adjacent all-weather playing fields for football, rugby and hockey
- and a cycle track, fitness studio, gym and meeting room.
As shown in a newly-released design image, the cycle track would encircle the whole park, with a tunnel from the clubhouse and car park allowing access to the other facilities.
The initiative is a bid by the town’s sports groups to create a lasting legacy following the success of local athletes such as cyclist Lizzie Armitstead and triathlete brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee at London 2012.
