Villagers are being urged to fight plans to build hundreds of new homes which will “radically change the character of Bramhope”.
Miller Homes has submitted a planning application for up to 380 new homes, a convenience store, and a public open space at Breary Lane East.
The application has been made against a background of fierce opposition from parish councillors who are warning about its effect on the village.
Now Bramhope and Carlton Parish Council has written to residents urging them to oppose the scheme.
When the development was first mooted the council issued a strongly-worded statement stressing that the development was unwelcome.
Council chairman Denis Johnson said: “Bramhope would increase by over 30 per cent, radically changing the character of this village. Vital green belt land would be lost forever. Local infrastructure could not sustain such an increase.
Now in his letter to residents he says: “This has all the hallmarks of an attempt to bypass the Housing Allocations consultation carried out this summer by Leeds City Council. LCC will publish revised proposals next year, followed by a public inquiry that will finalise by 2015 the Housing Site Allocations for Leeds until 2028. If Miller Homes succeed in this outline planning application, the Site Allocations exercise will be irrelevant, as planning consent on this Bramhope site would be final, over-riding the allocations reached through formal public consultation.”
But the developers are stressing that it will bring benefits to the area including parkland, ponds and a convenience store, as well as ease the housing shortage in Leeds.
When the proposals were first put forward, Tim Williams, strategic land manager for Miller Homes, said: “At present Leeds has a significant shortfall of housing and we believe that our proposed development of high-quality family homes will help reduce this.
“We are also aware of concerns regarding traffic in the area and have proposals to address these.”
The council is urging all residents to lodge an objection to the application before the deadline of Tuesday, December 3.
