10:00am Sunday 13th October 2013 in Local news
An Otley butchers is hoping to continue its 2012 success at this year’s Great Yorkshire Pork Pie, Sausage and Products Competition.
Weegmanns Butchers won the black pudding championship in the last event and will, along with other businesses from the town and across the county, be competing again this year.
The 2013 contest takes place at Bradford’s Cedar Court Hotel on Sunday, November 13, and is expected to attract hundreds of entries from butchers, farm shops and bakers.
Organised by the Confederation of Yorkshire Butchers Councils, it is the UK’s biggest regional meat trades contest and has three pork pie and sausage classes, separate black pudding and beefburger categories and a best newcomer prize.
The confederation’s current president, Steve Martin, who runs Bentley’s Butchers in Pudsey, is a past Great Yorkshire pork pie and sausage supreme champion.
He said: “The later date for the 2013 competition is regarded as ideal, as it comes after the hectic Bonfire Night period and ahead of the Christmas rush.
“It’s a very special 50th anniversary year for the confederation and we’re all hoping for a bumper entry.”
Mr Martin will be also be hosting the president’s annual dinner dance at Cedar Court Hotel on the eve of the competition and is inviting more butchers, along with their staff, families and friends, to attend.
Competition programmes and entry forms are being distributed to all Yorkshire butchers by the National Federation of Meat & Food Traders, the confederation’s parent body. Entry forms can also be downloaded from greatyorkscomp.co.uk.
