Otley Sailing Club runs up second royal honour
9:56am Friday 11th October 2013 in Local news
A Wharfedale sports club will be presented with a second official Royal thank-you this month.
Otley Sailing Club is one of just 40 organisations to have been picked to receive a Duke of York Community Initiative award.
The accolade is presented each year to a small number of Yorkshire-based groups deemed to be “of real value to the community, well run and an inspiration to others.”
The Otley club has been offering sailing and Royal Yachting Association training to enthusiasts of all ages since 1958.
From 1989 it has also been providing sailing opportunities for people with disabilities and learning difficulties under its Sailfree scheme, for which it won the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2012.
Club commodore Matt Thomas will be joined by vice-commodore Paul Karran, Norman Stephens of Sailfree, and Peter Fox, representing Sailability, when he travels to Bridlington Spa to receive the award from the Duke.
The club won the RYA Yorkshire OnBoard Club of the Year Award earlier this year for “oustanding” work introducing young people to the sport.
