Otley’s MP is backing a Parliamentary motion that condemns a new Russian law widely perceived as being anti-gay.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a controversial bill in June that bans the “propaganda of non- traditional sexual relations to minors.”.

Defenders of the legislation claim it is intended to protect children.

But critics around the world have slammed it as being part of a wider crackdown on Russia’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland has signed an Early Day Motion that brands the law an attack of human rights.

He said: “This is a worrying sign of attitudes in Russia towards gay, bisexual and transsexual people and is an unacceptable attack on human rights.

“The UK Government must raise this issue with Russia and work with the inter-national community to stand up for these people’s rights.”
