Is creepy Otley graffiti a protest against Big Brother?
7:00am Friday 20th September 2013 in Local news
A spate of “creepy” graffiti in Otley could have been a protest against CCTV cameras.
A series of large signs painted in white, bearing the message NO 666 along with a picture of the all-seeing eye, sprang up on walls and roads around the town recently.
The markings have been annoying and puzzling residents, with no-one quite sure what they are supposed to mean - although they have provoked theories about devil worshipping or the Illuminati.
Now some readers, commenting on the story online, have suggested they could have been intended as a protest against ‘big brother’.
Posting on the wharfedaleobserver.co.uk website, ‘RobinEdgar’ said: “I think you will find that this graffiti is essentially saying - just say no to state surveillance.”
Frances Lincoln also wondered if that provided a link for the police to explore. She said: “There is a camera opposite the one on Garnett Street. Are there cameras near the other ones?
“Maybe the police should actually use the camera to work out who did it.”
Otley’s Neighbourhood Policing Team, however, is not convinced - and points out that not all of the locations that were targeted are actually watched over by cameras.
Another reader, meanwhile, ‘hkleeds’, is angry that Leeds City Council is having to foot the expense of the clear-up. They said: “Why are we paying for this to be removed? Find out who did it and if they can’t pay, make ‘em scrub.”
