Music society founded by David celebrates 70 years
1:00pm Saturday 31st August 2013 in Local news
A popular music appreciation society in Ilkley is about to enter its 70th season.
The Wharfedale Recorded Music Society began life in 1944 during the Second World War after Ilkley-based soldiers joined locals to listen to 78rmp recording of classical music.
Members of an officer training unit based in the town formed Ilkley Gramophone Society which used to meet at the King’s Hall until members of the unit were posted elsewhere.
However, Ilkley members carried on meeting at the house of an army officer based in the town, but when he too was posted they decided to carry on themselves.
The founder member was 16-year-old David Pyett, who is now 86 and remains the club’s chairman to this day.
Then as now the meetings began in early autumn and continued until May. The audio equipment was the best available and included the famous Wharfedale loudspeakers.
Today the Society meets on Wednesday evenings – except for the Concert Club dates – at 7.45pm in St John’s Church, Ben Rhydding.
Club member Catherine Clarke encouraged new members to join the club. She said: “Sharing music is so much more enjoyable than sitting at home on your own.
“It is a very friendly group and we do have eminent visiting speakers who are world authorities on their subject.”
She added: “The programmes are varied in content and presentation. This season we shall hear music by many composers including Aaron Copland, Berlioz, Brahms, Britten, Chopin, Elgar, Schubert and Verdi.
“There will be seven eminent visiting speakers and five audio-visual productions. Members who wish to present an evening of their own choice are encouraged and supported but there is no compulsion to do so.”
The Society has always been a member of the National and Yorkshire Federation Groups and members can attend events arranged by them.
New members are always welcome, as are guests who would like to attend occasionally.
The Society starts its 70th season on Wednesday, September 18 with the chairman’s choice to include Brahms’ Symphony No3.
Programmes for 2013/2014 are available at Ilkley Tourist Information Office. For further information contact the club secretary Barbara Satterthwaite on (01943) 601538 or visit the website: wharfedalerecordedmusic.ilkley.org.
