Otley mum really is fighting to help playground campaign

A martial arts-loving Otley mum is celebrating surviving a gruelling sparring and grappling fundraising challenge.
Mel Metcalfe had to survive 21 consecutive one-on-one matches at Otley Health and Martial Arts Centre on Saturday.
The mother of three and JuJitsu student was up against black and brown belts and admits to being relieved simply to have got through it, though she is still aching. “I didn’t die,” she said proudly.
Proceeds from the event, which are still being counted, will boost Mel’s campaign to have the playground at Newall Park completely revamped.
She said: “The health and martial arts centre is good at supporting community projects and charities and came up with this great way to challenge me and sponsor the Newall Park campaign, by having me take on a grappling and sparring match with 21 opponents.
“Senseis (teachers) Mike and Clare Hooker, who are 5th Dan black belts, black belt student Helen Walsh, and brown belt student Callum Barrington all took it in turns to kick my butt, with a ten second interval between each match.
“It was a great event and I would like to thank Clare and Mike and the rest of the club at the centre for giving me the opportunity to raise some much-needed funds towards the play park’s re-build.”
Mel has other fundraisers planned to bring in some of the £148,000 needed for the playground work, including a two-night Otley Zombie Apocalypse Run taking place this weekend for the cause.
