Ilkley GP on penguin mission
5:05pm Thursday 22nd August 2013 in Local news
An Ilkley GP and sports medicine specialist is to tackle a punishing long-distance bike ride and a half-marathon, all while dressed as a penguin.
Dr Jon Greenwell (pictured right), who works at the Ilkley Moor Medical Practice, is taking part in Penguathlon 2013 to raise funds for Yorkshire Cancer Research.
The team is targeting £50,000 of fund-raising for the charity.
Over the weekend of September 14 to 15, the ‘penguins’ will cycle 120 miles from Leeds to Newcastle. Once in Newcastle they will tackle the Great North Run (13.3 miles), and will subsequently bike the 120-mile return trip to Leeds.
Anyone wishing to sponsor Dr Greenwell can do so via his fundraising website justgiving.com/jon-greenwell.
Dr Greenwell completed his GP training at Ilkley Moor Medical Practice in 2006 and has worked as a GP at the surgery since. Since 2006 he has also undergone further training in Sport and Exercise Medicine and was approved as a specialist in this field in June 2012.
As well as working at Ilkley he also acts as Chief Medical Officer to Leeds Rugby (Rhinos and Carnegie) and is the Lead Medical Officer to the British Swimming team. He was lucky enough to attend the Olympics with the team in 2012.
The Patient Council at Ilkley Moor Medical Practice is hosting a Musculoskeletal Advice evening on November 4 at Ilkley Rugby Club. This meeting will have Dr Greenwell as its guest speaker and is open to the public.
