A magical mural to fire the imaginations of children and encourage them to discover a love of literature is being created at Ilkley Library.
Part-time librarian John Giles is creating a work of art featuring much-loved characters from children’s books such as the Gruffalo, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Rabbit, Winnie the Pooh and Little Nut Brown Hare. Mr Giles, 41, of Ilkley, who has a six-year-old son Thomas, has completed one wall and plans to cover all four walls of the children’s section.
Other walls will feature a fantasy landscape, the Cottingley Fairies and characters from Where the Wild Things Are.
“I have been working on it since February this year,” he said.
“I do it in my own time after I have dropped my son at school. Lots of parents have been coming in to see how it’s developing and the children really, really like it.”
A Mad Hatters tea party is being held in the library on Saturday, July 27, from 11am to 1pm to celebrate the mural. There will be games for the children and refreshments.
