Historic Chevin Cross installed by 50 helpers

Volunteers braved cold and foggy conditions last weekend to install the Chevin Cross once more above Otley.
About 50 helpers turned up on Saturday morning to hoist the 36ft high wooden monument into place on Surprise View.
An unmissable feature of the local skyline since it was first erected in 1969 as a symbol of hope, the cross will stay in place throughout the Easter period, for four weeks.
It has been raised every Easter since Otley Council of Churches first came up with the idea, and was also installed at New Year 2000 to mark the new millennium.
Rebuilt in 2000, the cross is made of timber salvaged from Manchester’s bombed Arndale Centre.
