Funding for school sports is welcomed
10:00am Saturday 23rd March 2013 in Local news
News that the Government is to provide £150m of new funding for school sports in primary schools for the next two years has been warmly welcomed by Keighley and Ilkley Conservative MP Kris Hopkins. Schools will be given lump sums to enable them to pay for extra coaching sessions to improve the quality of games and PE provision.
A typical primary school with 250 primary-aged pupils will receive £9,250 per year, the equivalent of around two days a week of a primary teacher or a coach's time Mr Hopkins said: “This is very good news and will enable primary schools to continue to build on the legacy of last year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“Sport brings a range of benefits and you’re never too young to start, which is why I’m delighted primary schools are being specifically targeted with this ring-fenced funding.”
