Otley Lions raise cash to help with bid to fight measles around world
12:00pm Sunday 3rd March 2013 in Local news
An Otley Lions stall has raised more than £300 to support a global measles vaccination campaign.
The group, which has already donated £1,000 to the One Shot One Life initiative, sold books and bric-a-brac and accepted donations at Otley Buttercross last Saturday.
The £303.54 proceeds will be combined with other contributions to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-led campaign, with the foundation increasing all donations by 50 per cent.
Otley Lions' publicity officer Patrick McCauley said: "We thank everyone who donated money, goods or time to make the event such a success - the proceeds will facilitate 683 life-saving vaccinations.
"Specific thanks go to Colourfusion of Otley, for producing an eye-catching advertising banner at a vastly reduced cost."
Measles is a major killer in the developing world, with 450 children dying from the disease every day. Vaccinations cost just 67p each.
