Legacy of textiles explored at Burley-in-Wharfedale conference

The legacy of Yorkshire’s textile industry is due to be explored at a conference at Burley-in-Wharfedale.
Dr George Sheeran, one of the conference organisers, said: “The history of the textile industry is well-known. What we will be looking at are the physical remains of this industry and the ways in which it has shaped the Yorkshire landscape and people’s lives.”
The subjects to be explored are the impact of the industry, the ways it affected small towns and what uses redundant mills are being put to.
“Much of the landscape is there because of human intervention as a result of this industry,” said Dr Sheeran.
A Noble Scene Of Industry: Cultural Landscapes Of Yorkshire Textile Manufacture, will be held at the Queens Hall, Burley-in-Wharfedale, on Saturday, March 9 at 9.30am. Tickets are £20 (£15 concessionary rate) which includes the morning talks, guided walk and tea or coffee.
