Otley jewellery raid tops the list of monthly crimes

A raid on a jewellers by masked robbers carrying axes was the most dramatic crime committed in Otley last month.

Police are still appealing for witnesses to that incident, which happened at S Manning Jewellers, on New Market, on Wednesday, January 30.

New figures for the month show that there were also four burglaries and six incidents of criminal damage in the town between January 1 and January 31.

The break-ins included a window being forced at Otley Rugby Club’s clubhouse, on Cross Green, where the intruder proceeded to damage alarms before stealing cash.

The criminal damage included several parked vehicles being hit, scratched or – in the case of a Ford Fiesta on Weston Drive – dented while someone walked over them.

There was also one theft from a vehicle committed during the month, when a Volkswagen van left unsecured at Otley Sailing Club, while the owner was working nearby, had a wallet, phone and money stolen from it.

Three youths, meanwhile, two 14-year-olds and a 15-year-old, have been arrested in connection with the theft of alcohol and cash from the Bay Horse pub, on Market Place.
