Two brothers from Bramhope have helped their school’s table tennis teams to become the West Yorkshire champions.

The brothers, who are pupils at the Grammar School at Leeds were part of the winning teams in the county finals at the weekend.

Year 10 pupil Faizan Siraj plays for the Under 16 team while his brother Shayan, who is a Year 7 pupil, plays for the Under 13s. Both teams won their age groups in the West Yorkshire Schools Table Tennis Championships.

As West Yorkshire champions, the teams now progress to the ‘zone’ finals on Sunday, facing competition from South Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire. The winners will take part in the regional finals, with the national final taking place in March.

The U13s beat Bradford Grammar School, Dixons Allerton Academy and Horsforth School, while the U16s took on Beckfoot School, Horsforth School and Bradford Grammar School.

Team coach Martin Gibson said: “These are outstanding results against some very strong schools, especially given that three of the players in each team were from a lower age group.”
