Otley Sailing Club has won a regional award for its “fantastic” work with young people.

The RYA Yorkshire OnBoard Club of the Year Award is in recognition of outstanding grass-roots programmes that introduce eight to 18-year-olds to the sport.

Regional OnBoard development officer Liz Wrigglesworth called in to the club during a training meeting to surprise them with the trophy.

She said: “Everyone was surprised yet delighted to be presented with the trophy. Some 130 youngsters have taken part in OnBoard sailing activities at Otley Sailing Club this year, with the club regularly attracting about 35 participants to their weekly youth club.

"With so many youngsters taking part it can often be exhausting for the instructors and volunteers, but their sheer enthusiasm and determination has ensured the club’s success.

"I would like to thank all the club volunteers who have supported OnBoard activities this year, from the instructors to the safety boat drivers and galley staff – their teamwork and dedication have been truly fantastic.

"A special mention should also go to OnBoard co-ordinator and senior instructor Antony Cam, who has worked so hard to organise and run the sessions."

Mr Cam said: "The receipt of the award is wonderful recognition for all our volunteers.

"We have a very special team who have grafted very hard to make the OnBoard club as exciting and fun as it can be.”

The award follows Otley Sailing Club being named a Queens Award for Voluntary Service winner last summer, in recognition of the benefits its Sailfree programme brings to dozens of people with disabilities each week.
