Get in the pink and help us to fight the cancer scourge!
8:00am Friday 18th January 2013 in Local news By Jessica Nightingale, Reporter
Women in pink will descend on Ilkley in July as they pull together for Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.
Females are being urged to sign up for this year’s run as entries began to be accepted from Tuesday.
Last year, 930 women took part in the event in Ilkley and raised £52,341.
This year, organisers need 1,500 women and girls to stride out to help raise £90,000 for vital research.
Event organisers are issuing the rallying cry: “Cancer, we’re coming to get you” to mums, daughters, sisters, grandmas and friends, encouraging them to sign up as soon as possible.
Phillippa Sharpe, Cancer Research UK’s events manager, said: “Come on, ladies. Please play your part by entering Race for Life in Ilkley today. Together, we can hit cancer where it hurts.
“There are over 200 cancers and we won’t give up until we find cures for them all. It’s fighting talk and we mean every word we say. Cancer, Ilkley is coming to get you.
“Race for Life is non-competitive. It’s not about being fit or fast.
“Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun.
“Or they can choose to jog, run or even dance around the course if they prefer. Race for Life is an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease.”
Every hour around three people are diagnosed with cancer in Yorkshire.
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of events which raises millions of pounds every year to help defeat cancer by funding life-saving research.
Money raised through the event allows the charity’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across Yorkshire and Humberside.
Organisers are asking women and girls to join together to take on cancer at East Holmes Field, in Denton Road, on Sunday July 14.
