The year closed with a flood alert across Wharfedale as heavy rain swelled the Wharfe.

The Environment Agency issued an official flood alert on Sunday and it was not lifted till yesterday.

Fields close to the river were flooded as rainwater pooled and the Wharfe overflowed and covered part of a footpath at East Holmes Field, Ilkley.

But the area did not see a repeat of disruption in September when three roads along the valley were closed and Otley’s Wharfemeadows Park was shut.
