Overseas students get a warm welcome from Otley mayor
10:00am Monday 3rd December 2012 in Local news
Otley’s town mayor has been brushing up on her Czech, Polish and German.
Councillor Mary Vickers (Lib Dem, Prince Henry) tried her hand at greeting visiting overseas students in their respective languages at Prince Henry Grammar School.
Coun Vickers was visiting the school to meet staff and pupils from the continent who were working with their counterparts in Otley on a Comenius project, a European Union-sponsored educational scheme.
The mayor told Monday’s meeting of Otley Town Council that she had enjoyed the experience but wasn’t convinced about her language skills.
She said: “I tried to greet them in their languages and they laughed.
“I don’t know if it sounded anything like it should have!”
